For the precise testing of resistance welded spots of steel and aluminum, we have developed the PHAsis® mobile ultrasonic testing device. It replaces the destructive hammer & chisel specimen. PHAsis® is the first phased array spot weld tester (PAUT) with a physical resolution of the weld line diameter more accurate than 0.35 mm. It is ideal for testing 2- and 3-sheet joints with a single sheet thickness of 0.6 – 5mm. PHAsis® was specially developed for time-saving use in production. In addition to manual testing, it is also suitable for use with robots

Why a phased array spot weld inspection device?

Fig.: PHAsisNEO® has a high-quality, powder-coated housing with shock protection, replaceable display and passive cooling (no annoying fan noise). The swiveling handle with fixed locking positions guarantees the best view on the display.

Advantages of phased array ultrasound technology (PAUT) over conventional ultrasound (UT):

  • Imaging display of the spot weld as live scan (C-scan) and as result (D-scan, depth accurate) makes the weld spot “visible” and simplifies the evaluation of the spot weld quality.

  • The simultaneous recording of more than 700 measuring points results in a high resolution of more than 0.35 mm for the welding lens diameter. In combination with mathematical functions, this results in an exact diameter determination based on the reflected ultrasound.

  • An automatic, image-based evaluation suggestion as well as the determination of the welding lens diameter on the basis of stored parameters enables a reliable spot weld inspection without ultrasonic expert knowledge.

  • Simultaneous scanning of a larger inspection area reduces inspection times.

  • In contrast to inspection with conventional ultrasonic probes, there is no need to change the probe for different test specimens.
